Why Oklahoma City University?

An educated nursing workforce makes for a powerful organization

  • In the March 2019 issue of The Joint Commission Journal of Quality and Patient Safety, a New York University study found that baccalaureate-prepared RNs reported being significantly better prepared than associate degree nurses on 12 out of 16 areas related to quality and safety, including evidence-based practice, data analysis, and project implementation.3

  • The 2014 study, “Economic Evaluation of the 80% Baccalaureate Nurse Workforce Recommendation,” found that for every 10 percent increase in the proportion of a hospital’s bedside nurse workforce with BSN qualification there was an associated 10.9 percent decline in mortality following common surgical procedures.4

  • In a 2001 survey published in the Journal of Nursing Administration, 72% of chief nurse officers and nurse administrators cited stronger critical thinking and leadership skills and other differences in practice between BSN-prepared nurses and those who have an associate degree or hospital diploma.5

  • Two studies completed in 1996 demonstrated significantly higher levels of medication errors and procedural violations are committed by nurses prepared at the associate degree and diploma levels as compared with the baccalaureate level.6 Further findings in 2002 show that nurses prepared at the associate degree and diploma levels make the majority of practice-related violations.7

  • In 2014 a study found that organizations that focus on promotion of employee education, including career-development programs and payment for employees’ continuing education were found to have higher nurse satisfaction rates and lower employee intent to leave.8

Meet Pamela Stokes, MHCA, DNP, RN
Business Development Leader

I’ve been a nurse for 20 years and, for me, getting a higher level of education has always been a rewarding way to gain confidence and more advanced skills. I’ve worked as a clinical staff nurse, an assistant professor, a nurse manager, the associate director of clinical services at a university health center, and an education consultant. Now, I’m working for OCU doing one of the things I find most rewarding: helping other nurses advance their careers through education.
